Through inside sources at Horsham Council this site has learned that the much loved / maligned (delete as appropriate) Shelley’s Fountain is to be removed shortly. In a bid to smooth the way for the new multi screen cinema Swan Walk are funding the removal and replacement of this iconic piece of art.
In its place will be an ‘intermittent and spectacular 7m vertical water jet installation’ that will drain into the existing base. Ironically this will be yet another water feature to commemorate the life of the Horsham (Warnham really) poet Percy Bysshe Shelley who died by drowning in Italy. Inspiration for this new fountain comes from Shelley’s poem entitled Love’s Philosphy. The works will be completed in 2022 in time to mark the bi-century of Shelley’s death.
The old Fountain, located at the junction of Worthing Road, the Bishopric and West Street, is to be dismantled and a new home will be found for it in one of the Horsham District villages, most likely candidate being Steyning.
