This photo was the first to be posted on HiddenHorsham, the forerunner of this site.
This is a chain hoist on a gantry with a platform above Santanders (formerly the Abbey Bank) at No. 1 South Street. Carraiges would be unloaded and stored in the two upper floors of the warehouse prior to being resold in the shop. The fold down platforms are still intact on the two levels. The woodwork has recently been repainted in black. The two photos here date from early 2006.
Records show that the shop was originally called H Churchman then later Evershed & Cripps. The Churchman family lived next to the shop in what was Bookends.
